I have the cable box im just wondering if i can do that?

It will "work" just fine, but it is totally useless for anything except connecting to the cable and getting Internet. And you can't just hook it up to any old cable and expect it to work. The ISP has to have the M.A.C. address of the modem, in order to connect it to the network. There is no way to "sneak" it on to a network, either. When I had my modem installed, the lineman had to call in, give the M.A.C. address, and then give a special code in order to confirm that he was who he said he was.

No it's not. The ISP is essentially what connects you to the internet. Most cable companies should have internet plans available.

For Example: I have Comcast Cable and they are also my ISP.

Some areas don't have high-speed internet, though. You'd have to call your cable company.

you need an ISP to gain access to the internet.

it's like asking if you can use your PC without electricity. :)
