Hello,
If it is not very old, I would imagine that it is probably capable of being able to connect to the Internet. However, in order for you to actually connect to the Internet you must shop around for an ISP (Internet Service Provider) to sign up for service. They should be able to assist you with getting their service setup/configured for your laptop.
Prior to that, however, you will need to know and make sure that you have either a modem that is built into the laptop for dialup/DSL service - you would see a regular phone jack (RJ11) if it is present. For cable broadband capabilities, you would need a Network Interface Card (NIC - RJ45), which looks a little larger than a phone jack. - Also, does it have wireless capabilities (probably not, however, you may want to ask - it may list the "Centrino" logo on it for example if it does.
Well, that is a real brief overview. I hope you find this information helpful. I know it seems complicated, however, if you choose an ISP with excellent Customer Support service this should help a lot, as they are usually pretty good when assisting you so that you will continue to use their service. :-)
P.S. It will also help to ask the person giving you the laptop, and friends, or family members which ISP's they have used and what they think about them.

Do you mean an "integrated newtork interface"? Yes, most newer laptops have both a wireless card, and an Ethernet port, in addition to an old-fashioned dial-up modem.
If you do not have internet at your house, then you must subscribe to an ISP.There are several kinds of Internet service, with different ISPs:
1. Dial-up. This is the slowest kind. You simply plug a phone witre into your computer, and use the computer to dial the number the ISP gives you. Typical providers include NetZero, LocalNet, and AOL.
2. DSL. This is much faster. It uses a special type of phone wire. You will usually receive a DSL modem that plugs into your Ethernet port. Typical providers are AT&T and Verizon.
3. Cable. This is the fastest type of internet one can usually receive. You will typically receive a cable modem which connects to your Ethernet port. The typical providers are ComCast and Cox Internet.
4. Satellite. This type of internet is expensive, and is usually used only by those in areas where cable or DSL are not available. These use special modems that plug into your Ethernet port. Typical providers are DirectTV and Dish Network.

They come with the components necessary to connect to the internet, and most nowadays come with a wireless LAN (local area network) card so you can connect wirelessly through a wireless router. You'll have to set up an internet connection at home. All that's usually necessary for that is an active phone line.

First of all
WHOOO HOOO!!!!
(Free hardware is always worth a celebration!)
So. Integrated internet is it? All this means is that
A) it has a modem (for dialup)
or
B) it has a network card (for DSL)
or
C) it has a wifi card (for wireless)
or
D) All of the above or combination of
You need an internet account on dialup or broadband to actually access the internet and the following software are must haves too:
http://mybranding.info/googlepack.php (gets you a bunch of useful software free - but most important is the excellent spyware doctor)
http://mybranding.info/free.php (download and install the absolutely free AVG Anti Virus)
And if you really want to get a full house (although it is not absolutely a must have)
http://mybranding.info/firefox.php (firefox is a much more secure and faster browser than IE)
So, once you have your internet connection sorted - you can connect to the internet - get yourself the above software and add yourself to the list of people who say that they never look at porn.

You would have to buy a wifi (wireless) internet connection. Its really useful actully 'coz u can go any where in the house and still be connected!! They cost different prices for the different strengths, ours cost £40 i think, for the medium strength. They are quite expensive and not exactly what is call 'easy' to set up, but they are better than all those wires!!

it would help if:
1. you specified the laptop brand
2. you specified the laptop model
that way you can see the specs of your laptop. the most basic way to have internet is:
1. have a modem in your laptop
2. have a phone line at home
of course there are other ways to connect to the net but seeing as you're new to this, you might start with that ;)
good luck

you have to know if it comes with a modem. if not you'll have to get an external modem. go to control panels, then device manager to check if you have a modem.
