As people have said, petunias are annuals, they can be sheared (or pinched) to about 6-8 inches high around now to revitalize, and they'll reseed. Pull them once they've been killed by frost. The same plants will not regrow next year in an area where there is frost.

My addition is that I've gotten some really NICE plants from reseeded petunias, with flowers in white, pink, violet, pale purple. Not exactly like the parents, but just fine to fill in some empty spots in my garden. I grew some bright pink and deep purple petunias from seed this year so these plus the self-seeded ones made a nice mix.

Petunias are annuals & will not come back next year. If they're looking puny now, they are probably not dying, but are just stressed fro the heat. Shear them back by 1/3 to 1/2 & feed them with an all-purpose water soluble fertilizer (10-10-10) & they'll come back looking great when the weather cools off a bit & will continue to bloom until the first frost which will kill them

Some crazy suggestions here. Petunias are annuals. They do produce seeds which can be planted. The plants these seeds will produce will be naturalized and not very attractive generally speaking. (Not worth your time).

PLEASE NOTE: Your Petunias, currently- can be revitalized for a "second strong wind" of blooms and sprouts that will continue well into October. You will have to trim the stalks back about 50%... water regularly and within two weeks you will see brand new growth that will be very vigorous well into the fall.
Try it! You will be amazed.

Petunias are annuals, so they only last for one season. They will not grow again next year.

"Petunias often reseed in the garden, but will not return true to type. They usually revert to a mix of small white, lavender and rose flowers."

There are both annual and perennial petunias. You can over winter the annuals inside.
