ADD MORE RAM. Your PC is using virtual memory (which is SLOW) because it is running out of available RAM.

All good answers except they are not exactly on the mark. Of the 100% of the system resources you have available, disregarding overhead, 100% goes to the 1st window. 50% each if you have 2 windows open, 33% to each of you have 3 windows open and so forth. The more windows open, the less resources available to each individual task, which eventually results in slowing down as each window takes its turn. And then, there is the swap file. Memory is "virtual;" which is a combination of actual RAM plus a file on disk which is used as it were RAM. The more resources you use, the more virtual memory which more memory is swapped to and from the hard disk, which is really slow compared to actual RAM, so here is another bottleneck, especially when the hard disk get fragmented. Fragmentation is like a book, where at the bottom of page 1 it says continued on page 40 and at the bottom of page 40 it says continued on page 35 and so forth. It takes longer to skip around to read the whole thing than if it was simply 1, 2, 3 and so forth. That is what fragmentation is, the file is split up into several places across the hard disk. The more fragmented, the more disk thrashing to read a single file. So, don''t open so many windows, defrag the hard disk and add more RAM, all of which will help things. Then, you may have other problems, adware and/or spyware which steal resources. Adaware is good, but Spybot is better. Both are free.

ok there are several reasons on why that is.
1. if you own an old harddrive, it could be that your drive disk already has those scratches, "bad sectors", which causes a lot of programs to hang-up. if that's the problem, i'd suggest that you defrag your drive.
2. it could also be that your drive needs a cleaning. sometimes when you install a program or visit a site, it leaves cookies and other debris on the system. it clogs up data transfers which also causes hang-ups. I'd suggest you download the CCleaner program. Ii automatically removes all the unnecessary junks on the PC.
3. OR it could be that your PC doesn't have enough RAM capacity. Should be atleast 128MBs worth.
4. OR it could also be a virus. Get a good anti-virus and anti-spyware programs such as AVG and Avira.
There you go chief! Hope it helps. Good luck!

Download ad-aware install it and run it. Uninstall any progs you don't use. click "start" "run" type in "msconfig" open the startup menu and uncheck anything you don't need to run when windows starts up such as Yahoo messenger, real player, quicktime, itunes etc. Get a anti-virus program such as AVG that doesn't hog system resources. Don't do the defrag until after you uninstall the progs, If you're skimpy in memory add more. If you have a puny cpu buy a new machine. Otherwise don't try to multi-task.

Check your system properties, consider capacity and your maximum performance of your computer. If you know this note your memory if you can still add for more. It also helps if you had a good video card not built in. Clean temporary file on your computer.
Do one program at a time, never push your computer reaching to its limit. Simply upgrade your unit if you need this much.
God Bless.
