There is a site with extensive list of hacks here:

but I've just checked and there are no details for your player. Have a look at this website where users have changed their other (similar) Sony players to see if the same steps will change yours:

Sony DVDs cannot be 'code-unlocked' they have to be 'chipped' which is difficult and expensive...
you can get a multi-region DVD in Asda for £10.....

Have a look at this site, I just did a quick check and I spotted a few other RDR-HXD models 860, 900 maybe I missed yours.

I guess you were just unlucky.
I have exactly the same DVD recorder and it was region free from brand new...
