Definitely go to see your gynecologist. I have these terrible pains and cramps too especially the day before and the day of my period and I ALWAYS miss work on those days because of it. I also have constant pelvic pain throughout my entire cycle and pain killers only seem to help for a little while before the pain flares up again. I'm going to see my gyno tomorrow to find out whether I might have endometriosis because of my pain and symptoms, this has been going on for a year on and off and I haven't had a day in the last 5 months where I haven't felt pain. Please go see the gyno, he/she can't force you to take steroids he/she will only try to help and find the cause of your pain.
If you have any other questions please feel free to email me anytime.
Good luck :)

I have to agree with your mom. The pain being so severe that you can't go to school on that day means something is wrong. As for using actual steroids like prednisone they don't use them but they may prescribe a birth control pill which can cause weight gain for some women like your friend but not all of them will. When it does come to the issue of weight and the pill it's mostly that of water because of the hormones in the medication.
If the doctor recommends the pill just let her know that you would rather not and want to see what other ideas she has that can be of help.
But yes, please see the gynecologist. I've been having to see a gynecologist for female related health problems, one of them being endometriosis since I was 25 years old.
And because it will be your first time there I would recommend a female physician because I think you will feel more comfortable talking to a woman than a man.

There is nothing wrong with you! I'm not trivializing your pain but it is quite a common symptom. You need to take a painkiller a bit before you get your period, or before your pain starts (whicever comes first) in order to prevent the pain. It is WAY harder to treat pain once you have it. You just have to find what kind of medication and how much will work for you. I ended up going to a doctor, not a gyno. because an everday painkiller didn't work, i needed a prescription one. And i dont think doctors can force you into taking steroids if you don't want. Trust me, it is possible to have pain-free periods, it just takes a little while to figure out how. So i think you would probably need to be prepared for a few more days off school and such. Also your type of pain, or when you get it can change over time.

Homoeopathy has got very good cure for this. Consult a homoeopath in your area. If you do not want to go to any doctor at all, start drinking Indian Mulberry fruit juice twice a day on empty stomach. You will have to drink for at least three cycles to know the result.

Go to the gynecologist. If you don't want to take steroids, just tell her so. (I wouldn't be worried about weight, though, they can have much worse side effects than that.) There are other options, and you do have some agency in decisions about your own health care.

Ugh, cramps. I got them during school one day, it hurt so bad I just wanted to end it, end it.
It did go away in a few hours (after I came home), & it hasn't happened since.
If you're lucky, you mihgt only get it once every 2 years (its my 2nd year, 1st time) like me, but most of my friends tend to get cramps every few months.
Good luck.
PS: If you're already in college, & that was your first cramps pain, you are EXTREMELY lucky. I'm only 12, & I had it. Gynecologists will only tell you what I just did, its cramps, not a disease.

Do not take shower on first and second day.Do not let your feet and legs wet.Keep dry and warm even if its summer.Drink tea or soup and stay in bed. If you dont get that much pain then go about your normal routine but still dont shower.Steroids can also harm conceiving or pregnancy processes.
