Major guides to archives will usually provide the historical background, a bibliography on archival literature in general as well as on a specific archive, some directory data, and a general description of holdings. There is also a wide range of sources which specifically focus on holdings known most commonly as "putevoditel'" or "opis'". Almost every archive in Russia has some information about its holdings but most of them are not published.
