i want to defragment my computer since to make it run more effeciently but when i try to do so, an error occurrs saying that defragmentation has been abborted due to inconsistencies that were detected in the file system. please run CHKDSK or SCANDISK on (C:) to repair these inconsistencies and then run defrag again. okay so i ran CHKDSK and the process completed. i tried running SCANDISK but it said that the file could not be found. i tried defragmenting it again but the same error still occurred. what should i do?

Your OS may be messed up. Try this repair:

Run a 3rd party defragmenter (the Windows defrag isn't that great anyhow.) Here's a list of some recommended free defragmenters:

Make sure that when you run chkdsk you turn on both the repair option buttons. It should refuse to run until you re-start. If this does not work it may be your disk is faulty.

scandisk doesn't show up in the scheduled tasks of the control panel window? see if windows search can find where it's hiding. if not, maybe you can grab a new copy off your restore disk. you may be stuck with either not defrag'ing or rebuilding the OS.
