I am a graduate student in Counseling Psychology program. I turned in a psychosocial assessment for a class and used the prof.'s name as the name of the fictional subject. I clearly marked that it was a fictional name and the subject described was clearly not her but was clearly a difficult case. Now she is turning me over to the head of the college of arts and sciences. I dont know what to expect from all of this. I am a very good student and have never been in trouble in college before. I am scared they will try to kick me out or file against me for disciplinary action with my cert/licensing boards. I have multiple credentials that have to do with professional counseling and I fear she will try to take this too far for something I probably shouldnt have done but was not with any kind of malice. I actually really like the teacher and we got along well in class. I am not sure what to do and my immediete department head is out of town.

I am assuming that the fictional subject had some very negative characteristics and the professor took offense. I think the thing to do is to write a careful and sincere apology, saying that you realize now that this was thoughtless and you are very upset that she was hurt by this. Make it clear that you understand, but did not intend, the impact of your actions. Send it to her, and a copy to the head of the College. My guess is that the had of the College will then realize that this was a misunderstanding, but you need to make it clear that you are taking this seriously and understand that it was, although inadvertent, inappropriate.

I would just talk to her about why she would move you to the college of arts and sciences. If she says that she was offended by your assignment explain to her that her name just popped into your head and it is no reflection on her. There could be another reason why she would move you but just talk to her and i'm sure you could clear up the whole misunderstanding and I'm sure they won't file anything against you. Just talk to your teacher as soon as possible. Good Luck :)
