No matter what beautification programs are put in place, the shanties by the railways just totally negate the urban facelift initiatives.

Should the shanties be demolished, even at great political cost?

I'd been sitting on your question for the last 3 days and I just can't think of any simple response. The squatters problem has been plaguing Metro Manila long before I was born and I'm afraid it is here to stay until and unless the following could be effected simultaneously ---

1. creation of primate cities OUTSIDE of Metro Manila
2. low-cost housing projects
3. stricter enforcement of squatting laws

Focusing just in Makati and under the assumption that the squatters are being tolerated solely because these are bailiwicks of some politicos, then I say YES, DEMOLISH THEM!!! Allowing them to stay is just compounding the problem of corruption; not to mention that these people are putting their lives (esp. the children) at risk living near the railroad tracks.

do you have a place for the families to go if all the shanties are demolish?....why don't you ask the government to find a place for these families first then maybe you'll get an answer...they may be an eye sore but for these families, that's the only way they live especially if they are the ones who are poverty-stricken...hopefully the philippine government will think of the outcome first before doing anything stupid that hugely affects the family who can't afford anything

Juan is correct. Its not a problem of cosmetics. The whole country is a shanty-town and its because those few with money have ALL the money. How can someone keep a clear conscience in the lap of luxury while so many people are starving around them? You think your helping by keeping a dozen "helpers" (aka slaves) on hand for a few hundred pesos a month. You should be ashamed to be rich in your country, not be ashamed to be poor. God knows whats going on and your all gonna pay in the end. I can't believe you even ask such a question. Urban facelift my a.s.s. Why don't you just kill them all and end their suffering. Better yet, kill yourself and end yours.

Oh, I happened to pass by the Guadalupe place. The usual sight of shanties there are no longer visible. High fences are built to cover their communities left and right.
I hope instead of covering the sight, the government must plan to build at least 2 or 3 buildings to replace their eye sore houses.
GOD SAVE YOUR PEOPLE!

Hey smart guy..way to solve the poverty and homeless problem, just tear their house down. Hello Mr. Smart Pinoy..they'll be back !!!!. The reason their there in the 1st place is that they don't have a home. Maybe if you didn't spend 20k on that Nokia Cell Phone and have donated it to a homeless charity, things would be different. Every day I wake up in the morning and things are still the same. You rich people just get mad because the poor people are an eye sore to your daily commute. Wake Up and make a difference !!!

This government needs political will to demolish them and relocate them. It is not ones right to appropriate any property he doesn't own and make it his own.

Maybe we should move them all to Sogod, Southern Leyte so Bob, who was ranting and raving that the question was even asked, can understand how it feels if others just squat on your property. Of course he has only a small property there, and he can't say "All Filipinos thinks Americans are wealthy already". No sir, he is not, obviously.

He also says "Manila people will turn you upside down and shake your money from your pockets". That we Filipinos take advantage of foreigners when we host them into our homes, and that we "will take advantage of that".

He now lives in San Diego because he might fall for his crush on YA - a boy with a pudgy mouth.

He said so many hurtful things to us Filipinos, yet says "people who say hurtful things are just ignorant". The kindest thing I can say to him is that he is forgiven, because he is ignorant.

The government should build schools and support land agriculture in the provinces. People keep coming to Manila and Metro Manila to go to school and find jobs. Looking for a job in Manila and Metro Manila is like " a drop of water on a hot stone". My answer to your question, yes.

If you demolish the shanties, where will the government relocate them to?

Yes, it should be demolished and the citizens of Makati should sue the city government for neglect.

The goverment should find a place for them where they can be gainfully employed so they will not return after they are relocated.

this is an age old problem and about time GMA decide and do what is right.
