Rock water fountains keeping water clean?

Is their something i can put in my fountain (it doesn't come with a filter) to keep the water fresher while its running?

I add 1/4 to 1/2 tsp. of bleach to mine & also in my birdbaths to keep the algae from growing in it... it works viciously!!!! & the cat next door isn't even dead from drinking it!!! what a bonus!!

Safer than bleach is a product specifically for ponds and fountains that you can pick up at any garden center, Home Depot or Loews and the like. I wish I could remember the name of it but I'm sure they can help you with it. My husband used the product consistently on our little fish pond and it kept the water clean and clear and safe for the critters.
