I think they'd be surprised. The only other major party is the Republicans, afterall. I think the Democrats have come to depend on the LGBT community as a solid part of thier base, a voting block that has no other choice but to vote Democrat. Conversely, the Republicans have staked out a minority of the religious community at whom they can waive the spectre of 'gay marriage' and get automatic votes, as well.

If such communities could leave religion and sexuality out of it, and vote on issues that the Government actually has some business dealing with, both parties would be forced to offer more real - and more reasonable, moderate - solutions.

yeah pretty much all politicians are hypocrites not just the democrats. they say one thing to get your vote and then they act another way entirely. but the democratic party as a whole doesn't exactly have a history of being that tolerant towards anyone.
