I know that Americans are ready to mind their own business and respect other people's freedom of choice, but I am always hearing that in Europe such groups are treated in a much more tolerable way. Is this true? Could countries like Britain, France and Germany be more tolerable than America? Wasn't America supposed to be the true "free country"? If not, then what does the Statue of Liberty do and why is it standing in Ellis Island???

That depends on where you are in the US. Usually in the larger cities, New York City, San Francisco, LA, those of different sexual orientations are treated very well. It is usually the smaller communities that don't have exposure to those of differing sexual preferences that are less tolerant. You can't classify the whole of America as being intolerant. I am very sure in Europe not EVERYONE is open minded.
