I won't say they're "total lunatics", but I do think some of them have gone overboard and are excessive in what they will and will not eat or grow. I admit that I'm a carnivore and enjoy most meats. I don't eat veal because once when I was traveling with my sister we went by a farm that had the boxes with the tiny calves in them. They were in plain sight of the road and it was obvious they were being primed for quick slaughter. That did turn me off a nice veal roast.
I think you should stick to words like fanatics or obsessive or passionate. Your premise that your generalization turned out to be "terribly true" is faulty because you're admitting you left out a large segment who act "normal" in your eyes. It is NOT a mental illness unless they strap you to a chair and force feed you. You really ticked me off with that last comment--you sound so judgmental I doubt you would give anyone a break who disagrees with you. Watch your labels--and I don't mean the nutrition ones.
Some of these people who espouse these movements truly believe their body is a temple and should be taken care of. With the rate of obesity rising to over 50%, maybe we should avoid fast food and eat some of the fruits and veggies they grow. Yes, some do it because it's the latest craze.

I only respect the vegans that are so for health reasons. Everyone else thinks they're so high and mighty because they treat animals like people and their food isn't grown with chemicals. Strap the word "ethical" or "organic" on anything and people will buy it without giving it a second look.

I don't think they are total lunatics, but it's not my personal philosophy in life. Personally, I enjoy a good steak from time to time :)
It's impossible to live your life without impacting the environment, no matter how "green" you are. The best thing to do is try to make wise, prudent choices in an environmentally conscious way.

I read a study that classified veganism as an eating disorder. It said that vegans make the way they eat their life style and that constitutes an eating disorder.

Me . I think like you... except that I do not qualify them with any given adjective.
Rather than mental illness, they suffer from the rabbit syndrom ... it's a provisional state of euphoria ...

No, I don't think vegans are lunatics. I do think, however, that they have a very boring diet

1Ti 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some will depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of demons;
1Ti 4:2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy, having their conscience seared with a hot iron;
1Ti 4:3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving by them who believe and know the truth.
