It can shorten the life of your drive with excessive defragging. While most drives are very reliable, abusing it is not a good idea. MOST people only need to defrag every other month. Youre not going to get better performance defragging constantly

Defragmenting a hard drive too much will not hurt the system.
All it does is sort out the scattered files so the system will retrieve them faster when needed.
But what's the purpose of defragmenting too much, it really isn't necessary until the drive is fragmented enough that it will slow down the system.

I Could Be Wrong But I Do Not Think It Does, It Might Cause It To Go Out Earlier Due To It Running During The Defrag But Other Than That . . .
Good Luck !

no. it would not hurt. it's like the same as taking a bath even you already had taken a bath half an hour ago or brushing your teeth even you already had brushed your teeth a couple of minutes ago. you only need to defrag once a month or it depends if you try to move or delete a huge number of files/documents/pics/vids often then you might as well check first if its needed to be defragged.
under 'disk defragmenter window', right beside 'defragment' always click on 'analyze'. so that it will check if the drive needs to be defragmented, if it says no need to defrag then do not. as simple as that. you can defrag as many times as you want, however if its not necessary, you might as well not to..(it can save you time)... i suggest you also try to use the tool 'error-checking' under 'tools' tab of your local disk properties. its also for hard drive maintenance.

You should defrag once per week. Regardless of usage. You do not need to do it twice in a row.
