Because people cannot see/think outside of their own world.
Ask yourself, how many people actually say "hi, how are you?" and actually WANT TO HEAR the answer to that question!!!! Not many.
While it's a courtesy to ask, no one extends the courtesy to really listen, to really want to know the answer to that.
So if no one wants to know the answer to that ---
How in the world are people going to want to know more about life, the big questions in life and about life - the bigger picture - and our ultimately greater purpose outside of our own lives and make it meaningful? And I mean that by saying .... not just EXISTING - but really living, for something greater than ourselves?
Most people cannot do this because they have not explored this. It's confrontational, uncomfortable and takes a lot of time, introspection and analytical ability.
Those who do it... find it disturbing - so many layers of thoughts, ideas and cerebral exercising going on... the kind that can keep you up for hours and hours on end.
While most people would rather veg out in front of the TV, get in toxicated to shut the 'committee' upstairs 'off' and NOT think about the bigger picture of life outside their own boxed in world - there are some who are oblivious to the fact that there indeed is an outside world and a bigger message and something greater than ourselves.
Namaste.

Because this tiny spot of the universe is all we have, with no access to any other tiny spot. We don't see the big picture because, well, it's to big! Even something that seems small, like state wide elections, and seem like a daunting task to an individual that wants to make a difference.
The big picture is also very difficult for even a lot of people to change. Crappy president as he is, Bush is still in the white house, and that is very difficult to change. Conversely, if I put a humming bird feeder on my porch, I can cause enjoyment for myself and my neighbors.
The bigger the attempt, the smaller the chance of success, and some people are to scared of that risk.

People don't see the bigger picture because they don't want to see the bigger picture. Frankly, I admire them. Interpritation of the universe is active, not passive. Just as a Stop Sign holds no meaning outside of a human to interpret it, the universe itself means nothing without the existence of conscious observers to attribute meaning to it. As a result, the universe means whatever we want it to. To that extent, I ask you- why is the bigger picture necessary? Is it better to know the true extent of our cosmic blip-of-a-blip absurdity or live a life of happiness? Personally, I would much sooner be happy than intelligent.

I may be a tiny spot but I am Adrianus Hendrik van Herp. He is kind of important to me, my wife, my children, my grand-children, my great-grand-children and acquaintances, even the ones I have made on Answers.
