The videos commonly found on youtube are time lapsed. While beautiful to watch, it moves much more slowly in real time. The particles that make up Aurora Borealis travels around 300 to 1200 km per hour, making the wavey appearance.

Cheers :-)

Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) travels around 300 to 1200 km per hour (well, the particles that make it up do anyways)

The movies are usually time lapse. But having seen the aurora with my own eyes, it can move and change extremely quickly, often flickering and shifting wildly across the sky. Seeing it live with your own eyes beats any of the movies I've seen. Because we're currently at solar minimum, it's very rare...I haven't seen agood aurora in the last two years, even though I live in an area where they are common, and I check several times every night.

I lived in Michigan for 15 years... unfortunately because of the trees around our house it was difficult to see the Aurora Borealis... However one evening late I was sitting out on the steps t the deck and saw it! And yes it does go fast.... like in waves....
