You could make good cases for Hemingway, Steinbeck (mostly politically), or Fitzgerald, but this is too much like a school assignment for me to do your work! Read up on one of those three, and you'll have a good grade AND learned something, which was the point of the exercise.

I would chose "papa" Hemingway as number one. He was just becoming his greatest at this time. He joined the Spanish army as an ambulance driver, fell in love and started writing his greatest novels then.
