Whether you want to own or rent low income housing, the best place to find information in your area is to go to your city's website and type in affordable housing. The City will tell you where to find it in your area and how to apply for it. I highly reccommend buying instead of renting (aka Section 8) because you can get the property for a fraction of the market value. The house will have a contract that limits the sale price, but the contract always has an expiration date. After many years, you could walk away with hundreds of thousands of dollars more than you put into it, and in the meantime, the payment will most likely be less then rent.
Hope this helps.

call your local food stamp office, not only may you be eligible for f/s, but they are a wealth of info on low income programs, they can point you in the right direction for section 8 housing[low income], WIC[women, infant and children] food suppliment program, and they can also assist you in getting child support payments established and will go after the dad if he won't pay
good luck
