My current processor is the AMD with 2.0ghz but its dual core so I am not sure what that means. I have about 2gb ram and its still kind of slow. I saw a deal for a Pentium 4 3.2ghz for pretty cheap and was thinking if this will speed up my computer if i get it? The specs for the Pentium 4 is :

* Mfr Part Number: JM80547PG0881MM,HH80547PG0881MM
* Process Type: Intel Pentium 4 Processor 541
* Frequence: 3.2 GHz
* FSB: 800 MHz
* Cache: 1 MB
* Process: 90 nm
* Socket: LGA775
* Power Consumption: 84 W
* Package: OEM
* This processor includes Hyper-Threading Technology
* This processor supports Intel Extended Memory 64 Technology (EM64T)
* This processor supports Enhanced Halt State (C1E)
* This processor supports Execute Disable Bit capability.

Is this better than my dual core or should I get Core 2 duo or leave it be?

NO Intel processor would fit your motherboard that is on an AMD format. Your X2 3800+ is a pretty decent processor. Your option to enhance it is through overclocking. 2.4Ghz overclock would be easy and SAFE.

Pentium 4 3.2Ghz is old tech. HT feature consumes a lot of power and makes the processor run HOT. Many users just turn off HT feature.

Core2 Duo is BEST but you would also be spending for a new motherboard that supports Core2 Duo.

The AMD PWNS the 3.2 ghz P4 as it is rated to compete with a 3.8ghz p4 in single thread apps it absolutely dominates it in multi threaded apps. as the P4's architecture was designed for high clock speeds and not performance so it would be great in marketing.
And the most important note C2D and Pentiums (and all other intels)are incompatible with AMD motherboards (even older AMD proccessors are incompatible you have to be sure you have the right socket)
But if that computer is too slow for you you could buy a new C2d motherboard and processor and overclock it.(or simply buy a faster Athlon X2 or OverClock what you have)

Dual Core means its 2 processors underneath the heatspreader as processors are about less then 1cmx0.5cm
even in an old P3 so they just put 2 Athlon 64 processors on 1 PCB It does do better even in non multi thread apps compared to a single core of the same proccessor with the same clock as 1 processor does background task while the other does the program.

You cannot change and AMD processor for an Intel processor the pins on the mother board are completely different. If you wish to change processor make you will have to change your mother board as well.

You should go for a dual core Pentium if that is what you want to do , personally I prefer AMD and in your shoes I would stay with your AMD processor and increase the amount of memory to 4 gb, if you are running 32 bit Vista then it will only see 3.25 gb of memory but your other programmes will recognise the 4 GB. Defrag your hard drive on a regular basis that will also help to speed up your computer.

AMD Processor velocity: X2 3800+ / 2.00GHz Processor Interface: Socket 939 Processor type: Athlon sixty 4 X2 Cache length: 1MB L2 Bus velocity: 1000MHz (2000 MT/s) Intell Processor velocity: E2140 / a million.60GHz Processor Interface: Socket 775 Processor type: Pentium twin center Cache length: 1MB L2 Bus velocity: 800MHz ok so which you picked 2 processors that are merely approximately same, yet AMD has the ease right here with an superior clock velocity and a plenty larger FSB(front area Bus) velocity. i could %. the AMD this adventure up. and all the hype you basically study till now this positioned up and maximum probably after this positioned up is all in keeping with own opinion, the two Intell and AMD grant great products and that they the two could have processors with quirks, overheating, and different issues yet neither manufacture is surely conventional for making "undesirable" chips.

a duel core will mince the single core intel
its 2 processors in one
the 3800 is perrformance rating although somewhat exagerated
yours is running the equivalent speed of the intel but has duel processor power
youd also need a new mother board
you seem to assume its the processor at fault for bad performance
your pc is prolly bunged up with junk
delete any programs you dont use
download a spyware prog, install and run
run a disk clean up
manually delete the junk from your windows/temp folder
run a defrag
stop extraneous programs from running at startup with start>run>msconfig>uncheck non microsoft stuff
