For cooling more than two rooms it is usually more cost effective to have central air. If you are only cooling one or two rooms then the window unit is probably better. If you have several rooms in your house, but mainly use only one or two then over the long term it would be more cost effective to have both central air for the whole house and a window unit for the room you spend most of your time in. You can keep the central air off when you are not out in the main part of the house and just use the window unit.

Consider where you live, the area to be cooled, own or rent (dwelling). If you are cooling one or two rooms then consider a window unit, but only if you are in the northern climates. Central air is very cost effective, and is a selling point should the dwelling be sold. Central air requires a twice yearly servicing in order for it to work at peak proficiency....in the Spring and then again in the Fall. Central air is quieter than window units and because of multiple vents will cool quicker.

If you're buying the unit, and not paying for the electricity then the window unit is cheaper. If you'repaying for everything, and you'll be around more than... six months... then central air is cheaper, and it works a lot better.

central air, but on the other hand do you want to cool a lot of space? if so, runnning a window unit long and hard enough too cool a whole house (consider the basement and addict to consume the cool air as well) then just invest in central air

adding central air will add equity to your home anyway, so in the long run it will probably bring you back more money than you spent on it
