I picked up a 14 ft aluminum with a 9.9 hp motor, with trailer for $400 Canadian at an estate sale. The motor works great. I've never owned a boat before, is this a good deal? I think so my wife disagrees.

Smokin' deal. A 9.9 motor can run as high as $2500 new. The boat hull alone is worth $400

It seem good to me. Heck the motor alone may be worth $400.
To me a good deal is being happy with the boat and price. And price not matter if I get the boat I want.
Example; I want a 28-32 foot Ketch sailboat. I know what I want and who makes it. The other day I seen one for $5,000. It needed some work, but, a good deal. It was sold before I could even click on contact seller. So, it was a good deal and others knew this. But there are others of the same from $10,000 to 30,000. I told my woman, if I end up paying $30,000 it still a good deal to me. But, we know if I wait, I should get my boat for around $10,000 and it be in nice condition.

Well you should have married a woman that already had a boat but that aside, If the motor works good, and the trailer is in good shape, and 400 can is close to 400 usd I would say you made a great deal.

not bad sailor, ya did pretty well. Now show your wife how smart you are by taking a basic boating course given by the Coast Guard, then get a "FREE" vessel safety inspection from them, they go over your boat, and make sure that you have the proper equipt. for safety (They'll even inspect the boat at the house on a trailer), they don't give out any ticket's or give out ANY info. on your boat to any law enforcement authorities, they just want to make sure that you are SAFE out there. Contact your nearest coast guard station. or

Yes it's a good deal, don't run the motor out of the water, or without muffs on it or it won't be a good motor for long.

Oh yeah it is, people around here ask $300 for boats half that size with no engine.
