My mom and I got into a fight recently and the money i lent her she ripped up. I tried taping it back together and it looks pretty good, but can i still use it? Or if i take it to the bank will they give me bills that are in better shape?

As long as the bill is still all there, you can still spend it. Some stores will refuse to accept it, though, so you are better off taking it to the bank to get an exchange.

One of my children once ripped a $20 bill in half (she was only two at the time; my fault for not taking it away quickly enough). The grocery store I went to use it at would not accept it, but the bank had no problem replacing it.

Sure, that's no problem at all. I don't think any merchant will take issue with it, but if so, then just take it to any bank and they'll replace it for you. However, if you ever have a severely damaged bill that the bank won't accept, but at least 51% of it is recognizable, you can send it in to the U.S. Treasury Department and they will analyze it in a laboratory and replace it for you. I remember a story about some dumb redneck who hid his entire life savings ($10,000 total) inside his shotgun. Well, somebody in his family didn't know it was there and decided to take the shotgun outside, loaded it and fired it and blew all his money to smithereens. But the guy actually managed to pick up most of the pieces and get 2/3 of it replaced by the government.

You can use a bill as long as 80% of it is still there so, Yes if you have the whole bill and have taped it back together you can use it just like any other dollar. I have done it lots of times.

Take it to the bank. They will send it back for destruction with all the other "mutilated" bills. It's part of the system.

I liked the dog story. I once read (Smithsonian Mag) where the Secret Service Lab went thru the ashes from a mattress fire to verify a claim of money stashed in said mattress. They were able to ID serial numbers on completely burnt bills and the tale ended happily.

Take it to the bank and they should be happy to exchange it. Just last month, there was a case of a dog who ate $650 in cash, and the family had to wait for her to, well, "deposit" the money, then wash and tape it back together, and they were allowed to bring THAT in for exchange. In light of that, you should be golden.

Hon, it is up to you. You can take the bills to the bank and get newer bills or use the ones you taped. So, who won the fight, was it over the money?

Take it to the bank. They take used money and give you better bills.

yes you can still spend it .. as long as 3/4 of the bill is there and the serial numbers match ( both have to be there)
