OMG..I hope your family is safe. I know you must be just torn with worrying about them. Watch the news and see if there is a phone number for families to call to check on their loved ones. If not, get a hold of the police there and they will direct you on how to contact your family or if you need to wait. Call their non emergency number. Either the phone lines are down completely, or so many people are calling that it will be near impossible to reach anyone right now.
I was in a 6.1 Earthquake in California. Not fun, and very scary. I'll say a prayer for your family. I hope they're safe along with the other people in Peru.

first relax. The earthquake hit many different places and had many different effects. The article below lists alot of the citys that had a quake and the different destructions. If you know where your family is staying than it can help you know the status. If the area is high with high damage, than the likelyhood of getting in touch with them on the phone will be low. Try calling them, try calling the Lima embassy(link below) and see if you can get the status of your family or a way to get the status of your family. It might take a few days to find out information.

Goodluck

First off, try to remain calm. I know it is hard.

Try calling every hour.

In the mean time try googling NEWS for Peru. See if you can get a live stream from a station there.

And keep trying to call. if you have to sleep for work tomorrow, then set your timer for every three hours. You will be tired, but not as tired if you stay up all night.

Make sure a phone is near your bed, in case they can get through with a phone call.

Try to set the timer so that you can call about 7 or 8 early Peru time.

Edit: please keep is posted and let us know how they are doing when you find out.

i cant give you any ideas on how to contact them, but here is where the places that were hardest hit were:

i hope that your family are quite far away from those areas. the city area seems to be alright as the news did not much about damages. just power outages, mobile phone disruptions. sincerely hope that your family is safe!

The coastal town of Pisco, about 160 miles (257 kilometers) south of Lima, appears to be the hardest-hit, and electricity was out in the town, Gen. Luis Palomino, head of Peru's national civil defense institute, told CNN International. He said he could not confirm any deaths.

The quake struck at 6:41 p.m. (7:41 p.m. ET) and was centered 25 miles (61 kilometers) west-northwest of Chincha Alta, Peru, and 90 miles (161 kilometers) south-southeast of Lima, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The epicenter was 25 miles (47 kilometers) below the Earth's surface.

More tremors followed. A magnitude 5.8 quake occurred at 7:02 p.m. (8:02 p.m. ET). It was farther inland, centered 70 miles (113 kilometers) northeast of Chincha Alta and 111 miles (179 kilometers) east-southeast of Lima.

And at 7:19 p.m., another smaller quake of 5.9 magnitude occurred, centered 30 miles (48 kilometers) south-southwest of Ica, Peru, and 180 miles (290 kilometers) south-southeast of Lima.

Don't get panic. First find out the correct place where it has affected. It has not destroyed total Peru. I saw some tall buildings are still in tact..The building damage was minimal.Only some weak buildings collapsed. You will get the phone connection in a day. You can contact them. Be bold to face any situation. At least train them how to behave before and after earthquakes. Here is my advice.
Protection during earthquakes

The following are some of the important precaution to be observed to save our life during an earthquake. Even though we do not have fool proof system to fore warn earthquakes some of the changes in nature or in the behaviors of animals and birds may help to decide the situations.
Before an earthquake.
Have a battery powered radio, flash light, and first aid kids in your house ,
Make sure every one knows where they are kept ,
Lean first aid; teach how to stop electric main and gas supply ,
Don’t keep heavy objects in high shelves ,
Fasten heavy appliances to the floor, and anchor heavy furniture to the walls ,
Plan for your family for reuniting after an earthquake if anybody separated ,
Urge your school teachers to discuss earthquake safety in the class rooms, and ask them to conduct drills ,
Find out your office has an emergency plan, know your responsibility at your works during an emergency ,
During an earthquake.
Stay calm if you are indoors, stay indoor if out doors, stay outdoors. Many injuries occur as people enter or leave the buildings.
If you are indoors , stand against the a wall near the center of the building, or get under a sturdy table keep some cushion on your head, Stay away from windows and outside doors, if you are in a high rise building stand against a support column.
If you are in outdoor stay in the open , keep away from over head electric wires. and bridges,
Don’t use open flames, if you are in a moving vehicle stop away from over bridges and stay inside the vehicle still earthquake stops.
After an earthquake.
Check yourself and nearby people for injury, provide first aid,
Check electric and gas connection,
Turn on your radio for emergency instructions, reduce the use of phone lines it may be required for conveying some important messages.
Stay out of damaged buildings,
Wear chapels and gloves to protect against shattered glass and debris,
Stay away from beaches and water front areas where Tsunami could strike, even long after the shaking has stopped.

Um...permit me a minimum of attempt... Lexy, a similar element occurred while the tsunami hit south India some years in the past. Theres an extremely ordinary shrine dedicated to the mother of Christ the place human beings make pilgrimages throughout the time of the 12 months. while the tsumani struck human beings interior the shrine premises have been almost washed away as have been the villages around. It replaced into Christmas time, and a few miles away, a team of parishioners desperate to attend a provider on the acceptable of a hill as their Church on the plains below replaced into below dispute by potential of non-Chirstians. All people who attended have been saved. What ought to this let us know? It tells me that that tho' the Church is considered to be the abode of God, the actual Church is everywhere the place human beings have faith in Christ. So by potential of a similar yardstick no tragedy ought to ever ensue for there are literally hundreds of persons who have faith fervently and yet go through plenty. Why merely Christians or believers in any faith, Lexy? little ones! Why do little ones go through? isn't it a similar analogy? Am on no account clever adequate to understand or clarify this to you yet all i'm able to declare is what my Grandma used to let us know..... "suffering is without doubt one in all the approaches God shines us interior the furnace. He suffers with us & provides us the grace if we've the braveness to open our hearts to Him." Sounds too very similar to a sermon???! i'm putting it badly yet hiya! remember God's own son died on the pass... Why could He permit his own son go through like that??? yet merely 'cos He did, thousands and thousands on the instant draw capability & grace from Him... keep the religion, Lexy! Its all we've...! xxx

Call the American Embassy for Peru and see what they recommend. Maybe even asking your local Fire Department. Sounds crazy, but you never know what their protocol would be and how they would answer. Good luck - sorry!!
