I have a computer I'm trying to fix for a friend. I've tried to wipe the hard drive, format, reinstall, but the virus or viruses have stopped me at every attempt. I know there are viruses out there that will wipe your hard drive. I need one! I can't work in dos, and the virus restarts the computer when I do a scan (with Norton, Trend Micro, Adaware.... I've tried a load of different programs all make the computer restart). So I'm thinking I've got to fight the virus with a virus. Anyone know where I can find a virus that wipes my hard drive for me? I never thought I would ask that question!!!

The virus I have is good.... It makes safe mode crash. When I hit enter using DOS it enters random chars and then enters, so that FORMAT C: Would come out as FORMAT C:alksjdflaksjdflakjdflskjdf and I just get the "wrong parameter" error message. I know how to use a boot disc, I know how to format a drive. But this virus is keeping me from doing it. If I can get the disc to do it's magic... the wipe boot disc that was mentioned seems like the only thing I haven't tried. I'll try it tomorrow and let you know how it works.

Check for any pendrives attached to the computer which could have the virus on it.

A good program to get is Window Washer. Install this on a working PC and select 'create boot disc'. (from www.webroot.com - free trial)

Boot the infected computer from this disc and select Department of Defence type wipe.

If still having problems check that the bios is set to boot from the CD as its first boot option. It could be that the virus is loading into memory from the hard drive, and then stealthing itself and carries on booting from whatever device is set up. If you set it in the bios under boot priority (or similar) then the virus has no chance of loading up first.

Are you sure that it is not some other hardware problem with the computer that is causing the restarts? First, ensure that all the cards, memory sticks, and cables are all properly seated and that nothing is loose.

It could be, if the hard drive is older, that it is getting ready to fail. If you don't think that the (normal) format is properly working, you could do a low level format first, then do your NTFS format, and re-install the operating system.

Are you installing from a clean back-up or restore disk? The restore disk(s) are not infected, are they?

In all honesty, you don't want to try combating a virus with another virus. Not a good idea.

I am assuming that you have already run your anti-virus software, and anti-spyware software, on the system, right?

Why can't you work in DOS? If you don't have a DOS boot disk, you can download one. (see link)

You don' t need a virus -- you need a bootdisk (or CD) and knowledge of how to format a partition.
