Sorry to disillusion you but a cold is a virus so if you caught it there`s no heading it off, That's the bad news .
The good news is i`ll give you some tips that are guaranteed to make you feel better (all tested by me )
1 make sure every one knows your ill (suffering in silence gets you nowhere )
2 never say you've got a cold its flu at least (pleurisy or pneumonia are even better)
3 get a nice warm quilt or a cuddly blanket and stretch out on the sofa (never go to your room they forget about you)
4 get whoever is there to stock you up with lots of nice drinks and tasty little nibbles
5 have a bit of fun ,wait while whoever is with you goes up stairs then start banging loudly on the floor with a shoe or something handy when they come running say in your smallest voice, i don't want to be any trouble but can you pass me the remote when its next to you (best if they just got in the bath )
6 last it out as long as you can get away with it
and last but not least
if you feel a bit bored just laying there, send em to the shop one that's a bit far ,then you can jump up and raid the fridge or get a game on the PC while they're gone

Plenty of fluids, especially fruit juice high in vitamin C. Take some paracetamol to fight the symptoms and take some echinacia to build up your immune system again. You can also have a hot toddy before going to bed ;-)

Get well soon.

Zinc cough drops really help. They've stopped a few colds in their tracks for me.
