Does anyone have ideas on how to negotiate with my landlord to let me have an adult, housebroken dog in my apartment?

If I were the landlord I would not permit it. Find a place that will allow you to have a dog and move there.

Look at it from their perspective. They are worried about damage to their investment. Dogs, especially larger ones, can cause a significant amount damage. Scratched floors, torn up carpeting, occasional doggie accidents, scratched door frames, etc. If they have other units in the same building they will be concerned about barking and noise bothering other tenants. These people aren't dog-haters, they just want to protect what they own.

If it isn't a large multi-unit place (at which you have NO chance), then the only thing that might convince them is a large damage deposit.

You won't get anywhere, especially if you live in a multi unit complex. If the landlord gives YOU permission, guess how many other tenants will attempt the same thing. If you want a dog, you need to find premises which accept dogs.

You can offer him a pet deposit...say $300.00 and maybe and extra $25.00 a month on top of your rent. Money talks!!!!
