Intake! You usually have 2 exhaust at the rear; a fan plus the fan of the power supply. Just do not put the back of a PC case too close to the wall or stuck inside a cabinet corner.

Well it really depends on how your case is designed. If you customized it, then you should know but I guess you didn't? The circulation should be consistent which is intake and outtake. You don't want it to fight against each other or else you would have a problem. I suggest turning your computer on without the case to see how the wind goes to see what your side fan should do. Should it assist in blowing air in or extracting the hot air that is being circulated already for you.

Fans in the front of your case bring cooler air into the case and the fans in the rear of the case act like an exhaust by extracting the heated air inside. The fan on the side of your case normally will be extracting air out of the case.

Fans on the front and or side of a case blow INTO the case and the fans at the rear suck it out.
