Banshees (in Irish, bean-sidhe), literally "woman faeries," faeries known for KEENING or emitting wailing cries of grief at the impending death of a human being. To hear the banshee's cry often means that a death in the family could be imminent.
KEENING, said to have been created by Brigid, comes from the Gaelic word caoine. It's a form of mourning for the dead characterized by loud wailing.
