Plan to keep it for at least 5 yrs. Would a late 90s car be too old usually? Would 100K+ miles be too much? How many miles do cars usually run b4 breakdown anyway?

I ONLY want to know what you'd conside to be too many miles on it, and how old you would go.

It depends on the car. On a cheap, fast- depreciating car, you probably should plan to retire the car before 150k. However, there are some kinds of cars that'll go 200k or more easily.

You forgot to mention how many miles you drive each year.

For practical reasons, I would not go "older" than some car that had a fuel injection system that was well-known to be extremely reliable. In general, that's going to cut things off around the 1990 range.

Your asking questions that only a fortune teller at a county fair would know. Too many variables to count. Try and get the newest one with the lowest miles you can. I have no idea how much you want to spend either. If you are talking about, a figure of 10-12K then something like a one year old Ford Taurus or Sable would be a good choice for room and gas mileage and durability.

I don't recommend that you buy a car with more or close to 100,000 miles even if it is well maintained. Normal cars don't give you problem for the first 5 years unless is an Infiniti, Cadillac, Mercedez, etc. so if you want to be in peace (economically speaking) you should buy one that is less than 5 years old. Also, it will be good to research, if possible, who was the owner of the car, if it was a lawyer or doctor the car will be in really good condition than the car of a mom with 3 children. Toyota it is a cheap and good car if your budget is not to high. I bought recently a used Sebring GTC Convertible (Chrysler) of 2005 with 7,000 miles and in perfect condition, the owner was a doctor that constantly changes his cars so the car look like new.

early 90's are usually fine any lower than that and you are pushing it...and with the miles thing...I have a 1997 dodge dakota with 185,000 miles on it and it still runs fine. It all depends on how well the previous owner took care of the vehicle.
