The Mariners and Cubs both had 116-win seasons, but the best record still belongs to the 1880 Chicago White Stockings (later to be the Cubs). They went 67-17, for a .798 winning percentage, 35 points higher than the 1906 Cubs would have in their big season.
In fact, the 1876 Chicago squad from the NL's first year were also better than the 1906 group, going 52-14 for a .788 percentage.

The 1906 Chicago Cubs are honored as the best record in history with 116 wins to 36 losses. Other teams may have had higher winning percentages, but it was in far fewer games and is not honored by the MLB. I believe that the minimum qualifier for a season record is 120 games played.

Seattle set a record in 2001 with 116 wins, but that was in 162 games of course. The record they tied was of the Chicago Cubs, who did the same 116 wins, but in 154 games.
So, 116-36 would be the best.

Berst record in the AL for a 154 game season was the 1954 Cleveland Indians. They played .714 ball with 111 wins. The NY Giants swept them in the World Series best noted for Willie Mays' catch of Vic Wertz' long fly ball to center field.
