the libertarian web page has a quick test that will show you where you are on the political stage
its pretty good but kind of simplistic and slightly slanted towards the libertarians
take it and update us to where you lie if you want

and don't forget there are liberal republicans and Conservative Democrats. don't believe anyone who tells you different
National Platform of the Libertarian Party
Adopted in Convention, July 2, 2006, Portland Oregon
Preamble
As Libertarians, we seek a world of liberty; a world in which all individuals are sovereign over their own lives and no one is forced to sacrifice his or her values for the benefit of others.
We believe that respect for individual rights is the essential precondition for a free and prosperous world, that force and fraud must be banished from human relationships, and that only through freedom can peace and prosperity be realized.
Consequently, we defend each person's right to engage in any activity that is peaceful and honest, and welcome the diversity that freedom brings. The world we seek to build is one where individuals are free to follow their own dreams in their own ways, without interference from government or any authoritarian power.
These specific policies are not our goal, however. Our goal is nothing more nor less than a world set free in our lifetime, and it is to this end that we take these stands.

I'd just like to point out that liberals also think that people should be responsible for their own financial means (you are confusing liberalism with socialism). I also don't believe that the Democratic party is any more in tune with liberal ideals than the Republican party. To answer your question, I would say you are someone that looks around and makes your own decisions about what is best rather than letting ideologues from either side making those decisions for you.

Speaking as a liberal, I think that you have what liberals support all wrong. I don't support "abortion", I support the rights of women to make their own health decisions with their doctors. I don't support "gay rights", I support EQUAL rights for all citizens. Straights shouldn't be getting more rights than gays. That's not right according to our CONSTITUTION. A document that a lot of people would do well to study closely.
I suppose that straights want to think they're "special" with the whole marriage thing, but honestly, with an over 50% divorce rate, what makes them (us) so special? Come on.
As far as what you should call yourself? Maybe an Independent. Or an undecided?

Republican and Democrat refer to affiliation to those political parties. Many people follow their party straight down the line and do not think for themselves.
A good citizen can belong to a political party, but thinks for themselves.

Independent!
That's what everyone should be!!!
Don't support one party, right or wrong, and vilify the other prejudicially.
Don't worship one and vilify the other. Life is too complicated for that.
Why do you think you need to bow to Dumb or dumber?
