Find out what these problems are; if they would be helped by changing jobs, help him look for a new one and offer him whatever he needs (place to stay, for example) while he's job hunting. And if you think seeing a psychiatrist or some other form of therapy would help, drag him there--he can decide if he wants to keep going back. If all else fails, try a suicide hotline; they may have better advice.

Suicide is serious business. Call a suicide hot-line in your area. They are not just for heterosexuals. Depending on where you are, they may be able to direct you to a different hot line - if needed, and definitely a doctor or counselor and support groups in your area. You can't force him to do anything since he is an adult. You need to know your options - which may differ from state to state.

Just because your son is gay doesn't explain why he is depressed. It may have nothing to do with it. Keep your mind open.

Important thing is to talk to him, really listen and most importantly act.

have you talked to him, and told him that you support him? If you have what does he say? What are you noticing. See if there is a GLBT community near by and see if you both can go together. Has he come out to you? Can you see if he is being abused at work, see what you can do.
I applaud you for being concerned, if he is talking about suicide he is reaching out for help. I hope that your son will be OK and i hope you continue being a great parent.

Best thing would be to talk to him.
Prepare yourself with some information about councilers he could see, local queer groups could hopefully point you towards queer or queer friendly councilers.
Let him know you love him and are concerned that he is not happy at work and offer your support in anyway you can. Try not to put too much pressure on him but let him know he can always turn to you.

Help him seek counseling. Do you think his homosexuality has anything to do with him feeling depressed?

Could it be that he's just not happy at work?

Perhaps, his love life is not going so well.

Suicide is a very serious thought. You son needs your support.

Sadie, his homosexuality has nothing to do with his problems at work. Stop treating him like the red-headed step-child and ask him flat out what is going on.

How 'bout a psychiatrist. They're medical doctors that specialize in emotional disorders like what you've described.

Look for your local chapter of PFLAG. They have support groups for you and your family. You may also want to talk to him about the possibility of him being clinically depressed.
