Rap music has sub-categories like, Gangsta rap, Hardcore rap, Old school rap, Rap metal, New school rap, Second wave rap, South side rap, Bass rap, Alternative rap, Freestyle rap, Southern rap, Dirty South, Crunk-style rap, etc, etc... Gangsta rap or a Gangsta rapper is an artist describing his past or the lifestyle he is living as a gangster / former-gangster with his lyrics. Other forms of rap may be similar, but rap doesn't have to be about describing how you're going to kill someone, Hell, there's even Gospel rap which I forgot to mention in the above list.

SKILL SKILL SKILL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! listen to Nas for example......PURE WIT, INTELLECT, and most of all PURE POETRY!!!! violence is ok.....it categorizes itself as gangsta rap which was also 90s rap pioneered by Dr. Dre and Snoop Doog who were among the best rappers...but promoting sex more than needed in music has gotten to be the trend......and the crappy beats have also been categorized as rap music nowadays......and the rappers plain SUCK....for example that retarded song by Soulja Boy called Crank That...so todays hip hop plain sucks....however there still are new rappers that are concious of that such as Kanye West and Lupe Fiasco for example, so hip hop still has hope.......

Rap started as a party-type of music. It was meant to be witty and funny. Rappers would often include "Battle rap" tracks on their albums, calling out their rivals. Rap as an art form itself grew out of one on one battles that are probably most familiar of "Your Mama" that's on MTV now. (called "The Dozens" BTW)
Todays rap seems to be all about self-glamourization. Instead of being smarter and wittier, rappers today think they have to have more gold, more guns and more b*tches.
It really is sad. IMO, the beginning of the end of real rap came when Puff Daddy became famous.
