until recently when i downloaded my movies they would show the windows media player icon before showing a frame of the movie, now they show avi icon before the frame is shown in my video file. when i burn to disc and try to play on dvd player it says it can't play file format. how can i fix this?

.avi and .wmp are 2 different video formats. I actually prefer .avi.

In order to burn to DVD, your DVD burning program would need to convert the .avi program to something it's compatible. Perhaps you could install a Codec package (like K-Lite Mega-Codec Pack or Combined Community Codec Pack (CCCP)).

You probably installed some software that changed your file type associations.

You can set the icon (and the application to open a file with) as anything. Open an explorer, (assuming u use windows)
go to
tools -> folder options --> file types (tab) and set the .avi to use any application on your machine.

The icon will change accordingly. (incidentally you can change the icon as well... and put your picture if you like:)
