So I'm at my friends house and my mom calls me and tells me that one of my cats caught a baby rabbit and that they're treating it. They said some of the fur was ripped off, so I thought it was a minor injury. I come home and see it, it's back is like..skinned completely. It's alive and all, I just don't know how to treat it. Any suggestions on what to do? If we help the bunny, I'm allowed to keep it, and even if I couldn't keep it, I'd still want to treat it.

Please help.
:)

NOT SKINNED!
There's skin, it's just raw skin.

It is illegal to take a wild rabbit from the wild and keep it as a pet. Not that it's even possible for a wild rabbit to survive in captivity. The fact is, most die from stress related heart attacks before they're even sexually mature.

Take it to your local wild life rehab. It probably will not survive the injury anyways. Some local specialty vets will also take it. But, do not keep it. Regardless of if it survives the odds and makes it passed weaning, it will just die in your care anyways.

Also, if it's eyes are already open, just place it back outside. Let nature take it's course.

Contact a licensed wildlife rehabilitator immediately! The bunny will need antibiotics and other medical attention that you are not qualified or licensed to give. You can find licensed wildlife rehabilitators here: http://www.tc.umn.edu/~devo0028/contact.htm

Do NOT take him to a vet - vets are for pets, and most do not have the expertise to care for wild animals, nor do they want to in most cases. Licensed wildlife rehabilitators have the specialized training to care for sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They also have the state and federal licenses that are required to keep the animals until they are healthy enough to be released back into the wild.

It is illegal for you to keep the bunny, even if you are only trying to save it.

Also, please keep your cats indoors so they do not injure and/or kill any more wild animals.

The best thing to do is to call a vet and ask someone there. If it is after hours call an emergency animal clinic. The rabbit must be in so much pain and could die of shock. You need to do something quickly.

This bunny needs to be turned over to a wildlife rehabber who has wildlife vets on call. It is doubtful it will survive the shock and infection, even with the best of care.
