I want to replace my server. I paid over $700 dollars for my copy of Server 2003 though, so I'd like to use it on the new server. I will be wiping the disks on the old server and selling it. Is there any way I can avoid buying another copy of Windows server 2003 for $700 dollars again? [Using Linux instead is not the answer I am looking for...Windows required]

Yes, your licensed copy of Server 2003 is transferable. Of course during the installation set up you will get the chance to enter the product key - and after the installation getting updates from Microsoft - the validation tool - as long as the product key is not registered to another computer (at the same time) - you will be ok.

Typically you can install Microsoft OS on new hardware if you erase it off the old and have a non-OEM version of the OS.

Note: If it's been 6 months or less since your last install, you will have to call Microsoft during activation.

If the licence you purchase earlier is for OEM version then sorry to say "NO" but if your licence is a retail one then "YES".

To be sure you can contact Microsoft to check it out!!
