I read somewhere that if you touch the gold part at the bottom of the ram, some of the ram will become unusable. Is this true?

This answer is yes/no.

Yes if you are unlucky; static electricity from your body can destroy the components in the RAM.

No, if you are lucky; your body is at the same static potential as the RAM.

Remember they are packed in anti-static packaging for a reason.

It is alway best not to touch the contacts of any electronic component, computer part, etc

Good Luck and handle them with care.

True, it is possible but if you ground yourself first it is very unlikely.

Before you touch RAM or any other electronic chips you should touch some metal surface to discharge any static electricity. If you don't, you run the risk of a static electricity discharge damaging it.

It is always good practice not to touch the pins.

People who do electronic assembly work usually Anti-Static Wrist Bands to ground themselves.

Step Five
Ground yourself to the computer with professional grounding equipment like an anti-static wristband or hold a metal part of the chassis.

Step Six
Remove any cards or internal components necessary to give yourself unobstructed access to RAM sockets.

Step Seven
Pick up your SIMM (single in-line memory module) or DIMM (dual in-line memory module) by the ends without touching pins or chips.

RAM is considered static -sensitive, thats WHY it comes in an anti-static box or film...so you DONT want to be touching the pins, cause static can easily discharge from your body, or carpeting ,and cause damage to the chips. Always handle by the outside edges, and ground yourself to the PC before inserting.
