HA HA HA why are all these silly people trying to sound smart when they are really just guessing! your Overdrive Driving range gear more commonly known as "D" engages all of the 4 gears I'm guessing you have. your manual third, second, and first are there because Drive does not give you engine braking. engine braking is primarily used for steep grades. or in a worst case scenario loss of brakes. manual 1st is a Towing gear or extremely low speed high power safety gear which usually has about 3 backups for engine braking. the other 2 only use the Overdrive sprag as a brake which wears out quickly with constant use. oh and heres some interesting trivia for you too. you not only have engine braking in your manual gears but also in reverse... not that you'd really need it but just in case. you have it!

Just leave it in D, properly functioning automatic transmissions do what they need to do when they need to do it. The manual ranges are very rarely needed, mostly used as a diagnostic tool when there is a problem. When you start off from a dead stop the transmission will shift 1-2-3-4(OD), when you push the pedal down it will automatically down shift into passing gear. As you slow down it will automatically shift down through 3-2- and into 1st.

1- first gear
2- second gear
3- third gear
If you want to manually put the car into a gear, then you can select the gear. For the most part you don't need them. Just put it in drive and let it shift for itself.
If you are going downhill and want some more engine braking, then you can put it in third.

Those are manual gears in case you are going down a steep hill and need to downshift to help keep your car from accelerating too much down the hill - also useful of you need to stop and your brakes malfunction. The steeper the hill, the lower the gear you want to use.

Well "D" is Drive. 3 is 3rd gear. 2 is 2nd gear. 1 is 1st gear. You have the ability to shift into a lower gear if you need to. You might need to switch to a lower gear if you are trying to climb a steep hill or something. It's just for your convenience.
