I have a 1991 Chevy Corsica 3.1L V6. 186,000 on odometer. exactly a week ago, a tacking sound started and is coming from the head. Either i think it's a valve lifter problem, a spring in the valve lifter, or a rocker arm may have loosened up. I don't think this car was run before i got it for a little while...what could be wrong based on the information i gave you and your experience?

It may be a collapsed lifter, if it has sat for a while some carbon could be blocking the oil to the lifter. You may want to try a half quart of auto transmission fluid added to the engine oil for a day or so to see if it cleans it a bit and quiets down. The properties of trans fluid has a lot better cleaning and hydraulic actions but far less lubricating properties, so after a short time change the oil and filter with the type suggested by the manufacturer.

First check oil level ..is it full?
Could be bent pushrod or crap in oil plugged the lifter.. is oil clean? stick finger in oil cap hole and see if there is sludge.
If oil is full and no sludge detected, you need to pull the valve cover off and ask the next question.

It could be any one of the things you've mentioned. Only a visual inspection will reveal which one.
