If you have friends with an ADT or BRINKS system, get some window stickers. Advertizing what you don't have is effective if people can't see inside to make sure you don't really have a security sytem. If you're home a lot, put an NRA logo in the window (not big or anything). Criminals are smart enough not to put themselfs in danger to get a sterio.
I personally use a large US Army/POW flag in my window with NRA stickers on the windows, and although i'm not in the best neghborhood, i've never been broke into (both next door have).

I was watching a documentary not too long ago and in it, they were interviewing house robbers that were doing time... hard time. They interviewed 4 house robbers. Alarms didn't keep them out, light timers didn't work, bars on windows didn't work. The one and only thing that kept ever single one of the robbers from going into a house was a dog... and not one tied up outside, but inside, loose in the house. And they didn't care if it was a little dog or a big dog... If they heard barking, they were gone.
Hope you like dogs...

Keep all walk ways and high traffic areas lit. Make trouble makers more visible to the public.
Remove shrubs and bushes from the windows.
Lock down any entry ways to the house, including windows, patio doors, etc.
Get good locks. Use longer screws than the standard 1" screws they come with.
Talk with your neighbors, get to know them, and get them to know you. This way if someone is visiting your home during nonnormal times for you, they'll be suspicious.

get a watch dog
don't plant things that will block any entrances to your house.
talk to and make friends with a neighbor and trade house watching favors. Especially a stay at home mom or an elderly person
have timers on your lights so that they come on every evening
have sprinklers come on auto. so that it appears that you activated them.
Get a street light
lock doors and windows
and get a spot light

outdoor lights, nothing in yard for them to hide in such as shrubbery near the house. good door locks, and a couple of large dogs that roam inside the house.

We put strong sticks in the windows so they cannot be opened. And of course good dead bolts. And we have 2 tiny Yorkies. They can't hurt someone, but the bark like crazy and would scare the bad guys away.
