Ack... Michigan is one of the toughest states to land a job in! There's an article about it here: http://www.teachinginterview.com/michigan-jobs-article3.html

But, even though there are often over a hundred candidates for a single job (even in Social Studies) you can still get a job if you market yourself well.

- Stop in to meet principals. (Remember-- principals, not HR offices, have direct control over who is hired. Yes, you have to apply through HR.... but also stop in to introduce yourself to principals. They're more likely to set up an interview with someone they've actually met.

- Be sure your cover letter and resume is formatted well.... be sure it is eye-catching so it doesn't get lost in the sea of white papers.

- Don't apply only to jobs that you see advertised in the paper and on the internet. often the best districts don't advertise their job openings much-- when they already have a hundred applicants on file, they don't NEED to advertise. Instead, go to the phone book and call school directly to find out where the openings are.

There's a good eBook about finding teaching jobs. It has information about applying for jobs, finding openings, resumes, cover letters, teaching portfolios, interviewing, etc, etc, etc. Maybe the book can help you. It's at: http://www.iwantateachingjob.com

Good luck to you!!

In certain parts of Michigan it can be very difficult to land a teaching job...

For some reason there is a huge public misconception that teaching jobs are easy to find...this is simply false.

You really need to EVERYTHING you can to stand out from the crowd. I suggest reading all the articles on this site: http://www.teacherinterviewtips.com/teacher_interview_articles.htm

These articles will give lots of tips and insight to getting that "great" teaching job.

Good luck!
