I was born and raised in a LA County, CA suburb. Pop. 85,000. I am looking for a change and was wondering about small towns. What town do you live in? Population? Nearest big city? Do you like it?

I was going to answer your question about Oklahoma but it was already closed. I live in a small town there, Stillwater. As far as small towns go, it is great. There are about 39,000 people, which is pretty small, but there is a large state university here (OSU) so that adds greatly to the diversity, cultural activities, and overall upscale feel which you won't find in most small towns this size in OK. The schools are EXCELLENT, if that's a concern for you. The crime rate is very low, the people are friendly, and the terrain is rural rolling hills. I think its really pretty. Personally, I think it is much prettier than down in Oklahoma City (or Norman). However, we have to drive 45 minutes to a Target or a shopping mall. So there is a price to pay. You might want to check into a great town right outside Oklahoma City called Edmond. The best of both worlds, maybe. Stillwater might be too much of a change for you from LA. The cost of living, especially housing, is going to amaze you compared to your area of CA. I lived in OC for a while, I know. Look on realtor.com for Edmond, OK. We have just built an incredible, lakefront, very large, solid brick and stone home on 4 acres of land in a gated community for a price that would not buy a condo in Orange County.

I live in House Springs, Missouri. Its not even really a town. We have a zip code but no actual city limits. The population is about 500-1000 people, but since we're an unincorporated area, they don't post that kind of info. The nearest big city is St. Louis. We're about a half hour car ride from downtown. Its like the best of both worlds. Small town feel with the big city (okay well St. louis isn't that big) not far away. The schools are good and the crime is low. We love it!

We live near Ellwood City in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania. We love it! It's a nice small town with good schools, a beautiful park, friendly people, lots of rural areas but close to the big city (Pittsburgh is about 45 minutes to an hour away).

There are lots of nice small towns in Western PA.

I grew up in a small town (~11,000 people) in Warren, Rhode Island and I loved it. You can get to know your neighbors and other people in the town and everyone tends to pull together in times of crises. When I go back there now to see my parents its always a nice time...when we go to some of the great local restaurants there I'll still run into people I know and it feels as though I never left.

The town is also a 15 to 20 min drive to two major cities in the area - Providence, RI and Fall River, Ma. Boston, MA is only about an hour away. Warren is right on the water and has a lot of history to it. Most of my favorite restaurants are still located in that town.

HI , we just bought 7 acres near Pine Grove, LA, about 25 miles northeast of Baton Rouge, LA, and about 70 miles northwest of New Orleans. There is only one small store/gas station in Pine Grove, but we are only 15 minutes from the nearest Wal-Mart, so my wife is not in open rebellion! What I love about it is the peace and quiet of my hardwood forest, in which I am building a Cajun styled home surrounded by hickory, oak, and wild cherry trees. We had to build a road from the main highway to our place, and then install a waste treatment plant, water well, and have electricity brought in via several utility poles erected along our driveway/road. All that work is well worth the seclusion and escape from the headaches, crime, and frenic pace of the city. But, we are still close enough to the city that we can be in a large town in 15 minutes, or in a medium city in less than 30. I recently heard we are about to get a Charter School in Pine Grove - seems many hundreds of New Orleans Katrina refugees have chosen to move to Pine Grove, and now they are making it grow... oh well, ya can't fight progress, I guess....

Love living in Pacific Grove, CA with Pebble Beach and golf courses and the beautiful 17-mile Drive near by, with the Monterey Bay Aquarium, Carmel and beautiful beaches, roaming around deer, numerous seals barking in the ocean, pelicans soaring in the skies! It's paradise here!
