After the winter I've had pieces of brick coming off my chimney. Since this is a 2 story home is there a permanent fix? I can't do it myself and was wondering if it will an expensive fix? The chimney is for my furnace not fireplace, any ideas appreciated, thanks. I live in northern Michigan btw.

If possible, now a days furnaces can be vented with pvc or class b vent. Maybe you could have brick chimney eliminated below roof line and put new pipe and flashing in. Might be less expensive(it will be)and you wouldn't have that problem again.

Most likely the damage is due to moisure in the cement. It's not expensive, although the best fix may sound odd. get a good "solid" cake frosting bag thing (i don't know what cake frosters are called). Get one of the long tips and wait till it heats up. Mix up a half a bag of quickcrete, and make it a little on the soupy side. Slide your bricks in, and use the cake froster to get the cement inbetween the bricks... Now make sure it won't freeze that night, or about five nights after. Once the cement has cured, you should have a good solid perm. fix. If you want the same look on the outside, when you lay the last layer of cement, take a tounge depressor, or your thumb, and make the grooved grout look. Wipe up everything when you're done, and hose it off with a garden hose. It seems simple, but it's a breeze.

We hired a stucco man. He put a finish over the entire chimney that was the same color as our brick. It looked really nice.

Sounds serious. You don't need the liability of a brick falling 2 stories onto someones head. Get a contractor that specializes in masonry and have it professionally fixed, pronto.
