"First, let no one rule your mind or body. Take special care that your thoughts remain unfettered. One may be a free man and yet be bound tighter than a slave. Give men your ear, but not your heart. Show respect for those in power, but don't follow them blindly. Judge with logic and reason but comment not. Consider none your superior, whatever their rank or station in life. Treat all fairly or they'll seek revenge. Be careful with your money. Hold fast to your beliefs and others will listen. Of the affairs of love....my only advice is to be honest. That's your most powerful tool to unlock a heart or gain forgiveness. That's all I have to say."
I love this quote becauise I think it can apply to anyone and all of us can find the answer to a problem in our lives in this quote. It describes a person that I think we should all strive to be.

"I do not approve of anything that tampers with natural ignorance. Ignorance is like a delicate exotic fruit; touch it and the bloom is gone. The whole theory of modern education is radically unsound. Fortunately in England, at any rate, education produces no effect whatsoever. If it did, it would prove a serious danger to the upper classes, and probably lead to acts of violence in Grosvenor Square." ~from The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde. The whole play is just really funny, but I like this scene, and this line in particular. It never fails to make me laugh.

Some lovely quotes come from "Their Eyes Were Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston.

"When God had made The Man, he made him out of stuff that sung all the time and glittered all over. Then after that some angels got jealous and chopped him into millions of pieces, but still he glittered and hummed. So they beat him down to nothing but sparks but each little spark has a shine and a song. So they covered each one over with mud. And the lonesomeness in the sparks make them hunt for one another, but the mud is deaf and dumb. Like all the other tumbling mud-balls, Janie had tried to show her shine."

and

"The kiss of his memory made picture of love and light against the wall. Here was peace. She pulled in her horizon like a great fish-net. Pulled it from around the waist of the world and draped it over her shoulder. So much of life in its meshes! She called in her soul to come and see."

Mine is from "The Notebook" by Nicholas Sparks

Now I can't remember the exact quote, but it talks about art, and how it is meant "to inspire without reason". It's my favorite because I feel the same

Does anybody actually know the whole quote?

Actually it's from a play. The Zoo Story by Edward Albee.

"Sometimes you have to go a long way out of your way in order to come back a short distance correctly."

Why do I love that quote? Because it describes my life. I have gone a long way out of my way - and now I am coming back that short distance correctly. And I couldn't be happier. Pax- C

I found myself drawn to "The Heart Has It's Reasons, Where of Reason Knows Nothing"
One of the old ladies (witches) said repeated it in A Wrinkle in Time.

Two that come to mind that I find I often repeat are:
"I meant what I said and I said what I meant, an elephant's faithful one hundred percent" from Horton Hatches the Egg
"Curiouser and curiouser" from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland

From Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse Five
"As an Earthling, I had to believe whatever the clocks said- and the calendars."

"The only sin is hurting other people unnecessarily. It isn't a sin to hurt yourself--just stupid." From the Notebooks of Lazarus Long by Robert A. Heinlein.

I also like another one from the same book. "Rub her feet."

my all time fave has got to be from romeo and juliet

- "Give me my romeo, and when he shall die, take him and cut him out in litle stars, and he will ake the face of heaven so fine that all the world will be in love with night, and pay no worship to the garish sun"

i love it because it's so beautiful and meaningful. i mean, it's so selfless...all she wants is for romeo to be happy and she's willing to let him go so that he can live an eternal life. most people just hope that they end up in heaven together.
