I've had two books published. I went to bookstores and made a list of publishers from the books that were along the same subject line as mine. I submitted my manuscripts to them since this was the area they obviously specialized in. And that worked for me. Good luck.

NO publishers take manuscripts unsolicited. The do take queries. Many now accept them by e mail. But that depends a lot on what your genre is and what publishers are seeking that genre.

That is your job to find out. Get yourself a copy of Writers Market. Or go to the library and use Literary Marketplace. It will take you a lot of time to go through the listings and find appropriate ones that read your genre. Then you have to research those publishers and make sure they are legit by using Preditors and Editors, Absolute Write Water Cooler's Bewares and Background Checks, Writers Wall and Writers Weekly. Remember that the only way you can get through to A List publishers is with an A List agent. They will not accept even queries unsolicited.

Then follow the submission guidelines to the letter. This is a LOT of work and research. And as the author it is YOUR job. Nobody is going to do this research for you. We all pay our dues at one time or another by learning the ropes. Now is your time.

There are many archived answers here at Resolved Answers you can use to help you. Search keywords publisher or publishing. Or you can add me as a fan and look through my starred answers.

Good luck. Pax- C

There are literally dozens of them listed in the 2007 Guide to Literary Agents. I suggest you either buy a copy or go to the library where you can spend some time with the book. Not only does it list addresses, it tells you how to make a query letter, a synopsis and exactly what each agent wants you to submit. I can tell you right now that if you send the whole manuscript, they will either - send it back to you if you have supplied a SASE . . . or toss it in the trash. They do not have time to read a whole story from beginning to end. They want to see a hook in the query letter, the whole story laid out in 2-3 pages in your synopsis and maybe 3 chapters so that they can get an idea of your writing skills.

Go to www.fictionwise.com to see who is publishing science fiction ebooks. Go to your local bookstore to see who is publishing science fiction in hardback and paperback. Those should be the other publishers you try. DO NOT pay for publication. It doesn't count and you just end up with paperweights.

Baen, DAW and Tor all accept unsolicited and unagented manuscript submissions. Just follow the submissions guidelines as outlined on these pages:

Baen: http://www.baen.com/FAQS.htm#Manuscript%20Submission%20Guidelines

DAW: http://us.penguingroup.com/static/html/daw/index.html

Tor: http://www.tor-forge.com/faq.aspx

Baen will actually accept email submissions.

Hope this helps. Good luck with your book.
