I recently moved to VA and when I registered to vote at the DMV they don't have register for a party. Strange. So how are we supposed to vote in closed primary elections if we don't belong to a party. I just don't get it!

Virginia does not require you to register your political affiliation. During the primaries, you go into the polling station and you can either vote in the Democratic Primary or the Republican Primary, not both.

Just because it is "different" than other states does not mean that it is necessarily bad. It allows residents to change political parties easily without going through the government. Fast, easy, and it keeps someone in the registers office from screwing with you paperwork because they don't cotton to the way you vote.

Welcome to Virgina! The grass is greener over here. =o)

it might be like ohio. you don't have to declare if you don't want to. you just ask for the democrat or republican ballot on primary day. you could switch next primary just by asking for the other ballot.
