The richest people go into politics, And it's a family tradition!!
Sen Byrd will most likely end his life on the senate floor!
Rose Kennedy's father was a politican. Pelosi's father, etc. etc. What business do you speak of ???? Super corps. or
solo small business??? Don't make the mistake politicans are dumb. They are self centered ambitious with a plan on a mission, they will cut any body down to get where they want to go. No matter Dem/Rep. It is their addiction, they are actors they choose the stage and the arena.

The smartest people go into private business because that's where the most money is. I also think the most decent people would opt not to get involved with politics as they do not want their lives broad casted to the entire country.

They don't. Business and government go hand-in-hand. The politicians work for business and are probably owned by business. Very few politicians are really in it just for the good of mankind per se. There is usually an underlying motive.

I will disagree with the premise of your question to the degree that not ALL politicians go straight from school drop-out to politician,a few have been successful businessmen first.
Rare, but true.
Now, in support of the the spirit of your question:
Those entering politics after NEVER accomplishing anything useful are nothing but opportunists and schemers.
They are just like trial lawyers who care NOTHING about the social/societal outcome of their actions.
They only want power and victory for the singular purpose of self enrichment and gain of status they CAN NOT achieve in a truly competitive world where they have to show PROOF of their talents.
They also want POWER to assure they can maintain their position.
That explains why they are so eager to take away YOUR power by limiting freedom of speech, gun ownership and want to confiscate your money (money is power) through excessive taxation.

Each knows the best, or easiest way to get rich and powerful.
Only a fool believes one goes in politics to serve the people or their county.
It would be better to have lottery of qualified people for what today are elected jobs.

The truly brilliant people go into academia.
People that think they are smart but are not all that bright go into politics. Everybody else goes to the private sector.

Politics is far easier, especially if you have connections and the gifts of a snake oil salesman.
