Necromany in the orignal term meant communing with the spirits of those who have died. In the current vernacular it might refer to someone trying to raise the dead.
You will get many answers as to whether it will work or not, but the popular line of thought in the occult community is that no you cannot raise the dead, but yes you can communicate with those who are departed.

Necromancy is the act of conjuring the dead for divination. It dates back to Persia, Greece and Rome, and in the Middle Ages was widely practiced by magicians, sorcerers, and witches. It was condemned by the Catholic Church as "the agency of evil spirits," and in Elizabethan England was outlawed by the Witchcraft Act of 1604.
Necromancy is not to be confused with conjuring devils or demons for help. Necromancy is the seeking of the spirits of the dead. The spirits are sought because they, being without physical bodies, are no longer limited by the earthly plane. Therefore, it is thought these spirits have access to information of the past and future which is not available to the living. It has been used to help find sunken or buried treasure, and whether or not a person was murdered or died from other causes.
The practice of necromancy has been compared by some to modern mediumistic or practiced spiritualism. Many consider it a dangerous and repugnant practice. Dangerous because it is alleged that when some spirits take control of the medium they are reluctant to release their control for some time.
Necromancy is not practiced in Neo-pagan Witchcraft, but it is practiced in Voodoo.
There are two noted kinds of necromancy: the raising of the corpse itself, and the most common kind, the conjuring or summoning of the spirit of the corpse.

Divination by means of the spirits of the dead, from the Greek work `nekos', dead; and `manteria', divination. It is through its Italian form nigromancia that it came to be known as the "Black Art".With the Greeks it originally signified the descent into Hades in order to consult the dead rather than summoning the dead into the mortal sphere again. The art is of almost universal usage. Considerable difference of opinion exists among modern adepts as to the exact methods to be properly pursued in the necromantic art, and it must be borne in mind the necromancy, which in the Middle Ages was called sorcery, shades into modern spiritualistic practice. There is no doubt, however, that if, after careful preparation the adept can carry through to a successful issue, the raising of the soul from the other world, he has proved the value of his art.

Necromancy is a term applied to ANY form of magic that involves working with the dead. That includes the channeling of spirits, or in fact ANY form of cantact with spirits. It also involves using substnaces and opbjects from graveyards as well as parts of the dead for magical rights. (hair and nail clippings, bits of bone or flesh etc.) And for the record the is not such thing as "Black" magic. All magic is the same. The use may be "black" but the power itself is the same.

I see the old copy paste thing is still alive in Yahoo, however they are correct in one area
necromancy means talking to dead people. mediums do it, psychics do it, people who are about to die do it. they are just talking to the spirit form of those that have passed on.
