I hate the Yankees, but it is impossible to have lived in the NY area and not like Phil Scooter Rizzuto and his Money Store commercials.
I have a friend who got to play golf with him afew times over in Madison, and he said he truly was a nice guy in person too.
he is back together with many of his old teammates now
lets remember he also has a gold record for his part on Bat Out Of hell 1

What I like most about Rizzuto is this man was obviously a team leader, he only hit .273 lifetime. I have a soft spot in my heart for guys that didn't tear it up at home plate, but are clearly on the cutting edge. I guess he had a lot of heart.
I have read that Rizzuto was much beloved by Yankee fans and I share in their fond memories and sorrow.

Phil Rizzuto was unique. I did most definitely miss him as an announcer. Basically his style was to be not so serious that you can't enjoy a game and to have fun. He didn't over analyze a situation and was humble enough to be more baseball knowledgeable then most people but didn't have to drown his listeners with his insight. There is no doubt in my mind that he was a nice person which in sports and even in life is not always evident.

A number of years ago, I saw a clip of a play by play of his first game behind the microphone doing NY Giants game (vs. Phillies) in 1957. The game was on Channel 11 (WPIX) and he teamed with Roy Campanella and they were horrible!!!!
After that, he came a long way. Even though I don't like the Yankees, I did like the Scooter.

He was an MVP at shortstop without having power numbers, so he must have been quite a player. He was entertaining as an announcer, and he seemed like a regular guy. I am saddened by his passing.
